Reading Truck Body Announces Major “Go Green” Initiative to Cut Customers’ Costs and Positively Impact Environment
Reading Truck Body has launched an initiative that will result in major savings for fleets and utilities along with positive change for the environment. The Company’s use of aluminum for many of its most popular products results in bodies with less weight that are more fuel efficient, while maintaining Reading’s strict standards of durability as evidenced by a new corrosion and structural warranty increased from six to 10 years.
Reading announced its decision to increase its use of aluminum during the Electric Utility Fleet Managers Conference (EUFMC), held June 15-18 in Williamsburg, VA. The announcement, which was enthusiastically received and generated much interest among participants, tied in nicely with the conference theme of “Powering your Fleet Toward the Future.”
“We’ve got to look at options that will allow fleet owners to continue to move forward and remain profitable,” said Jim Kraschinsky, Executive Vice-President of Sales and Marketing. “We need to be proactive and innovative now in order to meet our customers’ future needs.”
Environmental concerns, coupled with the rising costs of fuel and steel, prompted Reading to consider increasing aluminum content in its truck bodies. While the company’s “go green” initiative, which also extends to its manufacturing practices, is a recent move, its use of aluminum has a long and proven history. Reading Truck Body has been successfully manufacturing aluminum truck bodies of all sizes for more than 25 years.
“We know that we can do this successfully because we’ve been doing it successfully for a long time – from large digger derrick bodies to our standard service bodies,” Kraschinsky said. “We are well past the learning curve that other companies will have in welding and structural integrity of an aluminum body – especially a large utility body. It makes good sense to offer a broader line of aluminum bodies now so that we can give customers the kinds of products they need for today’s economic and environmental conditions. We don’t see fuel prices coming down.”
It is estimated that customers who utilize the new, less-weight truck bodies may realize fuel cost savings of between in excess of 10 percent, depending on body and chassis configuration. Aluminum bodies are typically 50 percent lighter than traditional steel bodies. The weight savings also translates to improved life for suspensions and tires.
Headquartered in Reading, PA, Reading Truck Body, LLC, has been a leading manufacturer of service and utility bodies, dump bodies, stake/platform bodies, caps and pickup storage boxes for more than 50 years.
